Terms of Service

Chippy is a Mac app that reads the text you select out loud, and this is its website. Using either means you agree to these terms, which are short because there is not much to agree to.

What Chippy is

You select text anywhere on your Mac, tap a key, and a voice reads it to you. The text you selected leaves your Mac to be turned into a voice; the privacy page says where it goes and what is kept. Every listen is kept in a folder on your Mac so you can hear it again. This site is where you sign up, sign in and download the app.

Your account

The person who holds the account must be 13 or older. A younger child may use Chippy on an account that belongs to a parent or guardian. Your account is your email address. There is no password. Giving Chippy an address puts it on the list, and Chippy uses it to send the emails the privacy page describes and for nothing else. One address is one person: keep it yours, and do not sign up with an address that is not yours. If you lose the address, you lose the account, because there is nothing else to prove it is you.

What you may not do

Do not use Chippy or this site to break the law or to attack the service. Do not use Chippy to read text you have no right to use. Do not send feedback that is not yours to send. Do not try to get into another person's account.

Preview

Chippy is in preview: there is a free tier, and the paid plans on the pricing page are heavily subsidised for now. It is offered as it is, without a warranty of any kind, and it can change or stop at any time. A feature can disappear, the voice can change, and the whole thing can go away. If it does, your listening history is still a folder on your Mac.

The software

You may install Chippy on the Macs you use, for your own use. Do not take it apart, do not sell it, do not rent it out, and do not pass it off as yours. The app stays Chippy's; the license to run it is yours for as long as these terms are kept.

Your text

What you select, what you hear, and what you keep in your history is yours. Chippy claims nothing in it. Feedback you send is yours too; sending it lets Chippy read it and use it to fix Chippy.

No warranty

Chippy is offered as it is and as it happens to work today. Chippy does not promise that it is right, that it is complete, that it is always up, or that a voice will never mispronounce your name.

If it goes wrong

If it goes wrong, the most Chippy owes you is what you paid for Chippy in the current billing period, which is nothing if you are on the free tier. Chippy is not liable for what you do with what it reads to you, or for a listen that is lost, late or wrong. Where the law does not allow this limit, the limit is whatever the law allows.

Ending it

You can stop at any time. Every email carries a link to stop these emails. Use it and they stop, and a sign-in link you ask for yourself still comes. Stopping the emails is not the same as closing the account: Delete my account on your account page closes it at once, and a request by email is done within 14 days. Chippy can close an account that breaks these terms, and tells you when it does.
