Privacy Policy

Four things are true of Chippy, and the rest of this page says them in full.

Your listening history is a folder on your Mac, and it stays there. The text you select is sent to be spoken and is not kept. Feedback uploads only when you send it. The app reports how much you use it, never what you read.

What is collected and when

Your email address, when you type it into the sign-up form on this site. With it, the browser's name and the page you came from, the time, and how many times you pressed Join the waitlist. No password exists, so none is stored.

A sign-in session, when you open a sign-in link. Chippy keeps a scrambled copy of the session code, never the code itself, with your address, the browser's name and the time. A session expires after 30 days, or the moment you sign out. A sign-in link works once and expires in 15 minutes; Chippy keeps a record of each link it sent you, when, and whether it was used.

Usage counts, from the app. Chippy on your Mac reports events with a number in them: that a read happened, how many characters it spoke, that onboarding started or finished, and which version of the app sent it. Each installation gets a random id for this, made on your Mac, that names nothing about you; reinstall and it changes. The events carry no text, no file names and no paths; anything that is not a number or a short plain word is dropped before it leaves. These counts are filed under the random id. When the app signs in to your account, Chippy ties that id to your address so your account page can show you your usage; nothing else about you is added to the counts. The app also asks this site whether there is free listening left this week, and that question carries the random id and no text.

The free plan has no listening allowance set right now, so nothing is counted against you.

Feedback, when you press Send in the app. Your note, the app's version, the macOS version, the random id above, and the recording you were listening to if the box for it is ticked when you press Send, along with any screenshot or video you attach. It is ticked to begin with, so untick it to send the note alone. Feedback is filed under the random id, not under your address.

What is not collected

The text you select is sent to be spoken and is not kept. Chippy does not store it on any server, and the site never sees it.

Your listening history, the audio and the words, is a folder on your Mac. It stays there. Nothing reads it but the app in front of you.

Your IP address. Neither this site nor the feedback service writes it down. The host sees it, as any host does; see the next section.

Who handles it

Speech: when you tap the key, the text you selected goes to a speech provider, which turns it into a voice and sends the audio back to your Mac. What the speech provider retains is governed by that provider's own terms; Chippy sends it nothing but the text to be spoken.

Hosting: this site and the feedback service run on computers rented from a hosting provider. The host sees the address every connection comes from and keeps its own logs of that; Chippy does not store it.

Mail: every email Chippy sends goes out through an email provider, from Chippy's own address.

Nobody else. No analytics service, no advertising network, no data broker.

How long it is kept

Your address and everything filed under it stay until you delete them. Your feedback carries only the random id, so nothing on it can be found by your address, and it stays as it is. Your usage counts carry the random id too; while the id is tied to your address your account page can show them, and when the tie goes the counts stay under the id alone. A session expires after 30 days. A sign-in link expires after 15 minutes and is useless after it is used once.

All of it lives in a database on the rented computers, reachable only with a key that Chippy holds.

Sharing

Chippy does not sell any of it, does not share it for advertising, and does not hand it to anyone except the three services above, each doing its one job. Where the law requires something to be handed over, Chippy complies, and tells you where the law allows.

Cookies

One cookie, and only after you sign in: it holds your session code so the site knows it is you. It is sent only to this site, never read by scripts, and it expires with the session. There are no analytics cookies and no cookies from anyone else.

Your rights

You can see what Chippy holds under your address, correct it, or have it deleted. Reply to any email Chippy sends you, or write to the address at the end of this page. Ask for deletion and everything filed under your address is gone within 14 days; Delete my account on your account page does it at once. Deleting the account also cuts the tie between your address and the app's random id. Feedback and usage counts carry only that id, so once the tie is gone they cannot be found by your address and cannot be deleted by it; they stay under the id. Every email Chippy sends you carries a link to stop these emails; a sign-in link you ask for yourself still comes.

Nothing on this site tracks you across other sites, so a Do Not Track signal from your browser changes nothing.

Children

An address on the list belongs to the person who holds the account, who is 13 or older. A younger child may use Chippy on an account that belongs to a parent or guardian. Chippy does not knowingly keep an address that is a child's own; an address reported as a child's own is deleted.

Changes

When this page changes, the date at the foot of it changes. The newest version is always at this address.
